My dedication to immigration law took shape while I was attending the University of Texas School of Law, where I began my studies with a strong commitment to social justice. I joined the Immigration Clinic, recognizing that my Spanish-speaking ability would help me build a stronger connection with clients who were facing difficult circumstances. One of my earliest assignments brought me to the Hutto Immigrant Detention Center, where I met a detained family seeking asylum along with their five-month-old daughter.
During the visit, the child’s mother asked if she could let me hold her daughter, telling me that I smelled like the outside world. As I prepared to leave, she made a heartbreaking request: she asked if I could take her baby with me until she was released. Although I could not do that, I knew there was something I could do, I could fight for their family with everything I had. I represented them throughout their asylum case, which ultimately ended successfully and led to their release.
Helping that family regain their freedom, along with the profound experience of seeing a child held in detention, had a lasting influence on the direction of my career. From that point on, I knew I wanted to dedicate my work to defending the rights, dignity, and future of those navigating the immigration system."
