Why Pennsylvania Court Records are Available to the Public?
In 1957, a law was established by the Pennsylvania State Legislature and signed into action. The law was named the Pennsylvania Right to Know law and aims to ensure disclosure of court records and other public records to the public

What Court Records Access Means To You?
The Pennsylvania Right to Know law is also known as the Pennsylvania Sunshine Act, which states that people have the right to access information concerning the conduct of people’s business. It is a series of laws designed to guarantee that the public is provided access to public records of governmental bodies in Pennsylvania.

Accountability to the Public
When the legislature enacted the Pennsylvania Right to Know law, it expressively declared that access to information concerning the conduct of the people’s business is a fundamental and necessary right of every person in this state: Pennsylvania Right to Know Law. In Pennsylvania, access to government and court records, in particular, has been deemed a fundamental interest in citizenship and has emphasized that maximum disclosure of the conduct of governmental operations [is] to be promoted by the act. By promoting prompt public access to government records, the Pennsylvania Right to Know law is intended to safeguard the accountability of government to the public.
